SHOUT OUT to our amazing teachers who came in yesterday to do some initial preparations and training on the new, statewide assessment called ISASP for
. We spent some quality hours testing our devices to ensure they were ready to go, reviewing procedures and administration times and ultimately had the teachers take the practice test to get a feel for the material and presentation style. Thank you teachers for your hard work and for putting in the time to make St. Matthew the best it can be!
You will hear more about the ISASP test in the coming months as students work on practice assessments in the classrooms. Test administration will be in April.

Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten Roundup
Thanks to the nasty winter weather, we had to cancel our Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten Roundup this week. We will now host that event on Tuesday, February 5th at 7 p.m. We hope all those interested in Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year can join us!
Arc Annual Sweetheart Dance Host
St. Matthew will once again be hosting the Arc Sweetheart Dance in Kearn Hall on Friday, February 15th from 7-9 PM. The Arc of East Central Iowa is a nonprofit agency that supports over 800 individuals with intellectual disabilities as well as their families. We are in need of cookies or bars. What a great night and experience for these individuals in our community. The students of St. Matthew will be partnering with the Arc as a service organization to make decorations for Kearn Hall.
As we have done in years past, we are asking for donations of desserts to provide the attendees of this event. This can be anything made, baked or even bought; please sign up on the link below to bring a dozen sweet treats. All items can be left in the teachers lounge or Kearn Hall by 3 PM on Friday, February 15th.

Message from the Principal
Happy Catholic Schools Week! Today has been an amazing day filled with lots of fun activities to celebrate each and every one of our students. What a great way to end our celebration.
Thanks especially to the Parent Association for all they provided, arranged (and rearranged) to make today so fantastic. We appreciate all they do!
Thank you for choosing St. Matthew Elementary...it is great to be a Jaguar!
-- Mrs. Amy Conlon
Essentials Team Highlight
We have been talking about how Essentials classes are similar to other core classes; now we would like to highlight how they are different. The biggest difference is that our success as a class can be diverted by a small number of students. If one or two students decide to not participate to their personal best the whole class often suffers. Performance based classes rely on each student to make a solid attempt to learn the skill that we are teaching. It can become frustrating that the final outcome isn’t as good as it could have been if all students had been giving their best effort. We always want our students to bring a positive attitude which often leads to working at their personal best. ~Ms. Carney, Mrs. Miller-Smith and Mrs. Williams
Thanks to our Xavier Saints friends for helping serve ice cream after lunch today!
