Staff Member of the Month
Congrats to Tiernan Dolan, Maintenance Director, for being this months staff member of the month. Tiernan has worked tirelessly these last couple of weeks to help keep our parking lots and sidewalks clear, in addition to managing the many parts of keeping a school warm and clean! We appreciate all he does to help keep St. Matthew running smoothly. He certainly does not have the most glamorous job, but he wears his many hats well and takes care of all our needs promptly! Thank you for all your work and most recently the many hours you have shoveled and spread ice melt!
Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten Roundup
We tried attempt number 3 on Tuesday and yet again we had bad weather and an early dismissal. So, we have decided to get creative and will be offering a virtual junior kindergarten/kindergarten roundup event that will allow families the opportunity to get the materials in a timely fashion. We are amidst the final touches, which means the materials and the presentation will be going home on Monday.
We will be adding some Q&A sessions that allow families to ask questions, as well as offer time during the March 14th open house from 5:30-6:00PM for parents to get a mini-presentation. We are happy to meet with any interested families and provide a tour of the building, please reach out by calling 319-362-3021 or email
to schedule a time.
Please let us know if there is anyone you know of interested in learning more about either of these opportunities.
Box Tops and Hy-Vee Receipts
Next week, please send in those Hy-Vee receipts and Box Tops...every student who brings in receipts or Box Tops will get to participate in a comfy clothes day on Monday, February 18th. The two classes that bring in the most receipts and Box Tops will earn an ice cream sundae party for their class!
Ms. Carney is needing some volunteers to help the younger grades with putting on their skates and equipment during our Skatetime unit. The more the merrier! Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Please sign up using the link below.

Arc Annual Sweetheart Dance Host
St. Matthew will once again be hosting the Arc Sweetheart Dance in Kearn Hall on Friday, February 15th from 7-9 PM. The Arc of East Central Iowa is a nonprofit agency that supports over 800 individuals with intellectual disabilities as well as their families. We are in need of cookies or bars. What a great night and experience for these individuals in our community. The students of St. Matthew will be partnering with the Arc as a service organization to make decorations for Kearn Hall.
As we have done in years past, we are asking for donations of desserts to provide the attendees of this event. This can be anything made, baked or even bought; please sign up on the link below to bring a dozen sweet treats. All items can be left in the teachers lounge or Kearn Hall by 3 PM on Friday, February 15th.

Believe it or not, it is that time again, time to start thinking about summer! Included below is a flyer for the Summer Solutions materials available for you. This includes both literacy and math, along with a few other options depending on grade level. Please highly consider this opportunity as it is a great way to keep students engaged and help reduce the summer slump and it compliments the workbooks we use throughout the school year!

Message from the Principal
Almost! I thought maybe we were going to make it a full week. Unfortunately mother nature has other plans and has decided we need yet another day at home! Please stay tuned as in the coming newsletters I will outline a plan for ensuring we meet the 1080 hours this school year. Right now we are at -9 hours; however, the XCS principals meet on Monday when we will determine a plan for make-up days and hours. Thank you for your patience!
-- Mrs. Amy Conlon
Essentials Team Highlight
In music class we are all working on performing with a steady pulse and giving our personal best every class. The kindergartners through second graders are using rhythm sticks to play a Maori Stick Game. The 3rd and 4th grade students are progressing nicely on their recorders. My favorite part about the recorder unit is how self driven the progress is. The more consistently students work at home the more progress they make in class. The 5th grade students are working on putting complex rhythms together for their bucket drumming unit. It is great to see the kids persevere through the struggles in every grade.
Musically Yours~ Mrs. Williams
Our students and teachers had such fun creating decorations with their Rainbow Teams for the upcoming Arc Sweetheart dance. Thanks for sharing your artistic talents, Jaguars!
