Jaguar Journal FYI's
Many of you are new to this newsletter as a school communication too; this section is intended to be your guide to understanding the Jaguar Journal. I strongly encourage you to take a few minutes every Friday to read through this communication and make sure you have any important events notated on your family calendar!
It is my goal to avoid sending you multiple communications throughout the week and instead coordinate all communications into this single email. This email will include all things St. Matthew related, but will also have important information from our counterparts at Regis Middle School and Xavier High School. We very much want to make sure you aware of opportunities and events happening at the other XCS (Xavier Catholic Schools) in Cedar Rapids.
The Jaguar Journal will be sent every Friday.
No School on Monday, September 2nd
Just a friendly reminder that Monday, September 2nd is Labor Day and there is NO school. Enjoy the long weekend. It looks to be amazing weather, yet again! We hope you are able to find time to enjoy the company of family and friends.
As we strive for continual improvement, one of the things that we need to look at is the safety of our students within our building, especially for those students with food allergies. In an effort to help make our cafeteria as safe as it can be, we will be changing our alternate options to a deli sandwich. One month the option will be turkey and the next month it will be ham. This will begin at some point in September; once we have a definitive date we will communicate that to you and also update our menus to accurately reflect the alternative deli sandwich option. Thank you for your understanding as we continue to find ways to make St. Matthew the best and safest environment it can be!
Author Visit on Friday, September 6th
We are very excited to be starting off our school year with an author visit from Miranda Paul. Miranda has written a number of fiction and non-fiction picture books that educate and entertain kids about the world we live in. You can learn more about Miranda and her books on her website:
She even has two new book coming out next week!
We are trying to get in a quick book order for Miranda's visit on Friday. In order to get books here quickly, we'd like order forms turned in next Tuesday when we return to school. We know this is short notice, but we are sure the kids are really going to enjoy this author visit and will want to get their hands on these books. Please fill out the form below and send it into school with payment (cash or check made out to St. Matthew School). If you have any questions you can reach out to Mrs. Giorgio at

A Message from ECC Director, Carrie Helgeson
Dear St Matthew Staff and Families-
I want to start this note by telling you all thank you for your kindness and friendship since I started my journey at the St Matthew Early Childhood Center in the summer of 2008. After prayerful consideration I chosen to leave the childcare field and have accepted a position with Collins Aerospace in Cedar Rapids. St Matthew Parish and the Xavier Community will always hold a special place in my heart as I have spent many years growing personally and raising my children surrounded in faith and love. Because of this, I hope to never be a stranger to the St Matthew Parish or to any of you.
Please know that I will be working closely with Amy Conlon, Principal of St. Matthew Elementary, and Heather Waddell, Assistant Director of the ECC, for a smooth transition and to ensure all of your family needs are met. Do not hesitate to reach out to myself or either of these ladies for assistance, they can be reached at
