1st Avenue Incident
The local media outlets are reporting shots fired at approximately 7:52AM at the Kum & Go located at the corner of 1st Avenue and 32nd Street. We have not received any direct communication from the Cedar Rapids Police Department but did reach out to them shortly after the event. They have indicated that we are safe to have families and students move about the campus, both indoors and outdoors, and do NOT need to be in a lockdown situation.
Additionally, we followed up with Arthur Elementary School to ensure they received the same communication and were not under any other directive. Arthur confirmed the information shared with us from the Cedar Rapids Police Department and are operating as normal.
Events like this bring light to this very important topic and our need to communicate with students regarding our plan. Please know that in the next week we will be sharing information with students regarding our plan for an internal lockdown (meaning all students will be in the "hide" response), as well as our procedures if we need to remove students due to an internal threat (implementing the "run" response). We at St. Matthew utilize the run-hide-fight model as a method of response to threatening situations. Our staff was trained on this in August, additionally we held a parent meeting to share this same information.
Please be sure to let me know of any questions.
