Summer Notes - Communication #9
July 30, 2020
July 30, 2020
We hope this letter finds you well. We want to thank you for your on-going support during the pandemic as well as your flexibility in planning for the upcoming school year. Information changes daily, and we are doing our best to respond to a very dynamic and complex situation. The purpose of this communication is specifically to address the current challenges regarding the Cedar Rapids Community School District Transportation Department.
As the pandemic has intensified over the summer, CRCSD has been surveying and communicating with staff members. Employees within the Transportation Department have the largest percentage of vulnerable populations when considering the COVID-19 data. As a result, almost 20% of the employee group resigned in recent weeks concerned about their health. Although CRCSD has spent the summer recruiting drivers, the gap has not been filled. Therefore, due to the pandemic, CRCSD is limited in its ability to provide the level of service that has been offered in most recent years.
Therefore, it is unlikely CRCSD will be able to provide transportation for students in partner non-public districts as well as some tuition routing within CRCSD’s student population. As the school district finalizes families’ choices in the Return to Learn opportunities (online learning, in-person learning, and hybrid learning), they will have a better understanding of the actual transportation needs required for CRCSD students who meet the transportation requirements.
CRCSD will have a decision by August 5th for our non-public school partners as well as CRCSD district families who utilize tuitioned transportation.
CRCSD realizes that this is yet one more complication for families, and they are very sorry to deliver this information. It is their greatest hope that we can work together to solve this complex problem; however, they also realize that the reality of filling the transportation positions necessary to support our former capacity is a challenge. They will continue to seek solutions, and they will communicate
by August 5th
Again, they do understand the burden this can be on families. If we have to resort to the aforementioned solutions, please know that they will continue to recruit employees and assess the transportation needs. It is the greatest hope of CRCSD to return to full service capacity in the future.

Legislative Action Needed Regarding School Choice
Dear Parents, Staff, and Supporters,
Federal legislation has just been introduced that could provide substantial, additional funding for Iowa’s STOs. We need your help in getting STO supporters to contact their U.S. Representatives and Senators and ask that they support this legislation!
The School Choice Now Act, if passed, would do the following:
Provide one-time, emergency appropriations to scholarship granting organizations (Like Iowa's STOs) to prevent widespread closures of private schools
Scholarship-granting organizations (STOs) would be authorized to use the one-time funding to provide families with direct educational assistance, including for private school tuition and home-schooling expenses
Provides a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit for contributions to scholarship-granting organizations (STOs), which could generate up to $5 billion in new funds for education
The Iowa Advocates action alert can be found below, please take a moment to voice your support and ask others to do the same! For some time we’ve been discussing the idea of a Federal tax credit that would funnel donations to state STOs (additional funding but still local STO control) and this is the bill that would establish that.
Thank you for your support!
